Well, I've landed back home after a Mammoth Trip. Always a balance between Adventure and Exhaustion! I think I got the balance right but I would say that, wouldn't I!? The will is as strong as ever, I just need my body to back it up!!
If I was to self-analyze, I would proclaim success in putting my Son first and the Birds second, which was my ultimate aim. Precious time for us both. The Birding was a shared interest which enhanced the Trip and I hope I passed on a few tips to him. He showed genuine interest and knowledge throughout our time together and it was wonderful to share some sightings and surprise discoveries.
Writing this during a Storm with a "feels like" of -2, it sounds somewhat inappropriate to complain about the Arabian weather but it was slightly hotter than anticipated, touching 30c on a few days. My choice to visit in January (most choose November) so no complaints there, we just saw what we saw...and enjoyed it. Missed plenty and had trouble accessing quite a few Sites, which was frustrating on occasions but it didn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
What else?
I couldn't have done this without him both financially and physically....and wouldn't have wanted to. He took his Jeep Wrangler and did ALL the driving...which was substantial. More on that later. A few logistical issues cropped up (which always occur on a Road Trip) but all were dealt with calmly and efficiently. I did feel some regret regarding not being able to share the driving but nothing could be done about that. It did allow me more time to plan our routes. He drove brilliantly and the Jeep allowed us to reach all habitats with ease.
It's daft to start my reporting from scratch, so I'll pick up where I left off with a sprinkling of summary from the initial days. I'm still in the process of downloading my photos which will hopefully enhance my Report. Adding my sightings to eBird will also help...my memory...
